Timeline: How long does it take?
A Canadian Citizenship application is currently supposed to take 12 months. However, in our experience it often takes much longer. Currently, Citizenship and Immigration Canada pledges to have the backlog of old applications done within 2 years or by March 2016, whichever is sooner. Applications can be expedited, but only under emergency circumstances.
Citizenship applications take longer for applicants who receive the Residence Questionnaire, for people who have to re-schedule or re-take the test, and for people who have to re-schedule the Oath. These so-called “non-routine” applications take an average of 36 months.
Why You Need Canadian Citizenship
(Right of Citizenship)
When Shouldn’t You Apply for Canadian Citizenship
- You will lose your original citizenship, because of laws in your home country.
- You do not meet the residence requirements – you could lose your status in Canada.
- You do not meet the language requirements – you will go through a lot of hassle for nothing.
What You Can Do as a Canadian Citizen
- Vote in Canadian Elections.
- Run for office in Canadian Elections.
- Work in jobs restricted to Canadian Citizens (such as Federal Government jobs).
- Travel visa-free to 170 countries including the United States.
- Live in another country without threat to your status in Canada.

Common questions
Canadian Citizenship entitles you to certain rights you do not have as a permanent resident, such as voting in elections and using a Canadian passport.
Canadian Citizenship cannot be revoked except under very special circumstances, whereas you can lose your Permanent Residence by travelling too much.
Applying for citizenship is a long process because Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) wants to ensure you are serious about becoming Canadian.
The language requirements are there to make sure you will do well in Canadian society. The residence requirement is there to make sure you have been living in Canada as a Permanent Resident. The citizenship test is there to make sure you have learned about Canada since you landed.
You will need to prove to CIC that you have met the residence requirements, or your application may be abandoned or rejected.
IMMIgroup can help you respond to this questionnaire.
